At least 11 stabbed at Walmart store in US state of Michigan

At least 11 people were injured in a stabbing incident at a Walmart store in Traverse City, a popular tourist destination in the Midwestern state of Michigan, on Saturday, July 26, 2025. Authorities have confirmed that a suspect is in custody following the attack, which appears to have been random.

Munson Medical Center, the region’s largest hospital, stated on social media, “We can confirm that 11 victims are being treated” following the attack. The hospital noted it was experiencing a “higher-than-usual volume of patients.”

Michigan State Police confirmed they were investigating “a multiple stabbing incident” at the Walmart store in Traverse City. “The suspect is in custody, details are limited at this time,” police added in their statement on X (formerly Twitter).

Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea later clarified that a 42-year-old male suspect, identified as a Michigan resident, was arrested and acted alone, using a folding knife. The stabbings reportedly began near the checkout area. Six of the victims are in critical condition, while five others are seriously injured, according to Munson Healthcare. Three victims underwent surgery. The injured comprise six men and five women.

Eyewitness Julia Martell recounted seeing a man with a knife stabbing people in the pharmacy section, describing “blood everywhere.” Sheriff Shea noted that such violence is “very uncommon for our area.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed solidarity with the victims, calling the incident a “brutal act of violence.” The FBI is assisting local law enforcement in the ongoing investigation. A Walmart spokesperson stated that the company is cooperating fully with law enforcement and that “Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we’re thankful for the swift action of first responders.”
