Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed profound grief and solidarity with Bangladesh following the tragic air force fighter jet crash this week at Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Uttara area. The incident has resulted in significant loss of life, particularly among young students.
In a message posted on his verified Facebook account, Prime Minister Anwar stated, “In this hour of grief, we stand with Bangladesh and mourn every life lost and every family devastated.” He added that he would be writing to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus to formally convey Malaysia’s solidarity with the people of Bangladesh.
Anwar specifically highlighted the immense courage of Maherin Chowdhury, a teacher who was among the victims. He noted that Chowdhury “rushed her students to safety and valiantly went back into the smoke and flames to save more.” The Malaysian Prime Minister emphasized that “her immense courage will not be forgotten.”
The message further conveyed his personal anguish over the tragedy: “My heart breaks for the people of Bangladesh after learning of the fighter jet crash into a school in Dhaka. Many lives were lost, most of them children. Over a hundred others were injured.”
The Bangladesh Air Force F-7 BGI training aircraft crashed into the school campus on Monday, July 21, 2025, during class hours. The incident has tragically claimed the lives of at least 34 people, including 31 students, two teachers (including Maherin Chowdhury), and the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Toukir Islam. Over 170 individuals were injured, many suffering from severe burns. The interim government of Bangladesh has declared a day of national mourning, and international support, including a medical team from Singapore and offers of assistance from India, has been extended.
