Bangladesh-US tariff talks to continue

Bangladesh and the United States agreed on some additional issues during the third and final day of the second round of trade talks held in Washington D.C. on Friday.

However, some matters still remain unresolved, and both sides have decided to continue inter-ministerial discussions. Following these internal deliberations, representatives from the two countries will reconvene for further discussions, which may be held virtually or in person. A statement from the Chief Adviser (CA) office indicated that the time and date for these talks are expected to be decided very soon.

Bangladesh’s Commerce Adviser, Commerce Secretary, and Additional Secretary are scheduled to return home today (July 12). They are prepared to revisit Washington D.C. if necessary for continued negotiations.

Following the three-day talks, Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin and National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman expressed optimism that a positive outcome can be achieved within the stipulated timeframe.

Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin led the Bangladesh delegation in Washington D.C. National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman and the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant on ICT and Telecommunications, Faiz Ahmed Taiyeb, joined the talks virtually from Dhaka. Senior government officials and experts also participated in the discussions virtually.

The entire three-day discussion process was coordinated by the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, D.C.
