Gomti River water level rising, 583 shelters ready

The water level in the Gomti River has surged significantly due to continuous rainfall and an increased flow from upstream sources. This has led to flooding in low-lying areas and crop fields along the riverbanks.

As of this morning, the river’s water level was recorded at 9.68 meters, which is 1.68 meters below the danger level, according to the Water Development Board in Cumilla.

“The danger level of the Gomti River is 11.30 meters. Currently, it stands at 9.68 meters—still about one and a half meters below the danger mark. The situation may return to normal if rainfall decreases and the upstream flooding subsides,” said Khan Mohammad Waliuzzaman, Executive Engineer (Gomti Division) of the Water Development Board in Cumilla.

Deputy Commissioner of Cumilla district Md. Amirul Kaysar stated that 583 shelters have already been prepared as a precautionary measure. “In addition, a sufficient amount of dry food, GR rice, and cash has been stored. The situation is being closely monitored, and emergency measures will be taken if necessary,” he added.
