France today reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with all relevant stakeholders to facilitate a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis, emphasizing the importance of addressing humanitarian needs on both sides of the border.
This assurance was given by Ambassador Christian Lechervy, the French Special Envoy for Myanmar, during his meeting with Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam at the Foreign Office this afternoon, according to a press release.
The French special envoy also highlighted the importance of the upcoming High-Level Conference on Rohingya issues, scheduled for September on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
During their meeting, discussions focused on the urgent need for a lasting resolution to the protracted Rohingya crisis, including early repatriation and the concerning decreasing trend of humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya people.
The Foreign Secretary conveyed his gratitude to the French government and the European Union for their continued support on Rohingya-related issues. He also expressed appreciation to the French Government for appointing Lechervy as a Special Envoy for Myanmar.
Foreign Secretary Siam sought Ambassador Lechervy’s support in mobilizing the international community to ensure early and sustainable repatriation. Highlighting the diminishing financial commitments under the Joint Response Plan (JRP) for the Rohingyas and the complexities faced by Bangladesh due to the prolonged stay of forcibly displaced people, Siam requested France’s cooperation in securing additional funds from the EU and global partners.
The Foreign Secretary underscored that Bangladesh bears a significant burden, necessitating greater international support.
