Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md. Mahfuj Alam today stated that the broadcasting system will be modernized with a primary focus on public interest.
He made this remark during a meeting held at the ministry conference room concerning the formulation of policies for cable TV digitalization, Television Rating Point (TRP) service provision, and Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms, according to a press release.
The Adviser noted that both the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology are involved in matters related to cable TV digitalization, TRP services, and OTT platforms. He clarified that the responsibilities of each ministry are determined by the ‘Allocation of Business.’ He emphasized the necessity of modernizing the broadcasting system through enhanced coordination and cooperation between the two ministries.
At the meeting, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant on Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, stated that a technology assessment plan needs to be developed to ensure the broadcasting system is both modern and people-friendly. He added that both ministries will decide how to include relevant stakeholders in this plan, expressing optimism that they will reach decisions regarding licensing, monitoring, and monetization.
Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farjana, officials from relevant departments and agencies, and representatives from the Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO) and the Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh (COAB) were present at the meeting.
