Trump slams Musk’s political party as ‘ridiculous’

US President Donald Trump has vehemently criticized Elon Musk’s recent announcement to launch a new political party, labeling the move as “ridiculous.” This public condemnation further intensifies the growing animosity between the former allies.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday before departing his New Jersey golf club for Washington, Trump didn’t mince words about the SpaceX and Tesla CEO. He branded Musk a “TRAIN WRECK” who had “gone off the rails” for his ambition to disrupt the existing US political landscape. “I think it’s ridiculous to start a third party,” Trump stated, adding, “It’s always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to confusion. Third parties have never worked. So he can have fun with it, but I think it’s ridiculous.”

The relationship between the world’s wealthiest individual and the former president has soured considerably. Once a close associate who headed the “Department of Government Efficiency” under the Trump administration, Musk’s break with Trump reportedly stemmed from disagreements over the president’s substantial “big beautiful” tax and spending mega-bill.

Musk, the South African-born entrepreneur, unveiled his intention to establish the “America Party” on Saturday, asserting it would challenge what he perceives as the United States’ “one-party system.” He has openly expressed concerns that President Trump’s extensive domestic spending plan will significantly escalate the US national debt. Consequently, Musk has pledged to actively oppose any lawmakers who supported the bill.

The former “DOGE boss” (referring to his past role as “Department of Government Efficiency” head, not the cryptocurrency), who previously spearheaded significant efforts to reduce federal spending and government jobs, has drawn parallels between Trump’s Republicans and rival Democrats on the issue of domestic expenditure. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk posted on X, the social media platform he owns.

Details regarding Musk’s new political venture remain sparse, and it is unclear whether the “America Party” has been formally registered with US electoral authorities. Nevertheless, the emergence of a new party could pose a considerable challenge for Republicans in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections and beyond.
