Touhid praises UNFPA’s role in advancing health, gender equality

Md Touhid Hossain, the Foreign Affairs Adviser, today praised the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for its significant contributions to Bangladesh’s progress in maternal health, family planning, gender equality, and humanitarian response over the past several decades. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with UNFPA.

The Adviser’s remarks came as Catherine Breen Kamkong, UNFPA’s newly appointed Country Representative in Bangladesh, formally presented her credentials during a meeting at the foreign ministry.

Congratulating Kamkong on her new role, Touhid highlighted UNFPA’s critical involvement in Bangladesh, particularly in reducing preventable maternal deaths and promoting adolescent health to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

In response, Kamkong lauded Bangladesh’s consistent advancements in maternal health, stating, “Bangladesh’s steady progress in reducing maternal mortality is globally recognized.” She acknowledged the nation’s demographic shift and improvements across key health and development indicators, including increased life expectancy, especially among women. “I am deeply honored to lead UNFPA at this pivotal moment,” she added.

Kamkong, an Australian national with over two decades of experience in international development and humanitarian response, has served with the United Nations since 2011. She reaffirmed UNFPA’s dedication to supporting Bangladesh in addressing both current and emerging challenges.
