Army warns against mob violence, arrest one

The Bangladesh Army has announced the arrest of an individual in connection with the recent mob violence that occurred on June 22 in front of the residence of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) K M Nurul Huda.

According to a press release issued today by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the arrested person has been identified as Md. Hanif. He was apprehended on June 23 and subsequently handed over to the police.

The ISPR statement reaffirmed the Bangladesh Army’s commitment to upholding law and order, asserting that it “will continue all necessary action to check any repetition of mob-violence in the country.”

The release detailed the disturbing incident that took place at Nurul Huda’s residence, located at House 29, Road 1/A, Uttara Sector-5. Around 7:00 PM on June 22, a group of six to seven individuals reportedly encircled the former CEC. In broad daylight, they physically assaulted him, forced a garland made of shoes around his neck, and live-streamed the entire event on Facebook, allegedly in the presence of police personnel.

The ISPR noted that a lawsuit had been filed against the former CEC, and Uttara Paschim police station was informed of the situation at 7:20 PM. Despite the police’s arrival on the scene, the harassment of Nurul Huda reportedly continued in their presence. Police later managed to bring the situation under control and transferred the former CEC into the custody of the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

The ISPR release further clarified that the army initiated its drive against the perpetrators after the incident came to the attention of the concerned army camp. This led to the arrest of Md. Hanif, who is accused of involvement in the violence. Hanif has been turned over to the police, and operations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals connected to the incident.
