Bangladesh to export 4,000 tonnes mangos: Official

Bangladesh is aiming to export 4,000 metric tonnes of mangoes within the next three months, with 600 tonnes already having reached 25 countries, officials announced today.

Mohammad Arifur Rahman, project director of the Agriculture Extension Department’s exportable mango production project, stated, “We are expecting to export 4,000 metric tonnes of mangos within next three months. By now we exported 600 tonnes to 25 countries.” He added that the 600 tonnes were shipped in the past 16 days, with the United Kingdom (UK), and particularly England, expected to be the single largest destination for Bangladeshi mangoes.

According to officials, the export price for mangoes ranges between US$5 and US$5.5 per kilogram, though freight charges account for a significant portion of this, typically between US$3 and US$4. Last year, Bangladesh exported 1,320.398 tonnes of mangoes to 21 countries.

The top destinations for Bangladeshi mangoes by export volume last year were the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Italy, Qatar, Singapore, Germany, Bahrain, Sweden, Canada, France, Maldives, Switzerland, Ireland, Hong Kong, Oman, Malta, Greece, Lebanon, and the Netherlands. Export statistics show that approximately 3,100 tonnes of mangoes were exported in 2022-23, followed by 1,321 tonnes in 2023-24.

Mango producers estimate Bangladesh’s mango yield this year at 2.7 million metric tonnes. Officials confirmed that Bangladesh produced 2.7 million tonnes in 2022-23 and 2.45 million metric tonnes in 2023-24.

Rahman noted that the primary varieties of mangoes exported are generally Gopalbhog, Himsagor, and Lengra.

For official export procedures, exporters are required to obtain several certificates and adhere to specific guidelines. Key requirements include registration with the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), an Export Registration Certificate (ERC), and a Certificate of Registration as an Exporter of Horticultural Products, especially for exports to the European Union. Quality control and strict adherence to international standards such as GLOBALG.A.P. are also crucial for gaining access to premium markets.

The project director of the exportable mango production project stated that officials at the central packing house inspect mangoes and issue phytosanitary certificates for agricultural exports. He also mentioned that 150 organizations involved in mango export are registered with the commerce ministry.

Agriculture Secretary Dr. Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian previously remarked, “Delicious tastes of Bangladeshi mangoes created their demand abroad.”
