U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday directed federal authorities to intensify deportation efforts in Democratic-led cities, further escalating his politically charged anti-immigration agenda following significant protests in Los Angeles.
On his Truth Social platform, President Trump stated, “We must expand efforts to detain and deport Illegal Aliens in America’s largest Cities, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, where Millions upon Millions of Illegal Aliens reside.” He asserted that “These, and other such Cities, are the core of the Democrat Power Center,” referencing debunked right-wing conspiracy theories concerning widespread voting by undocumented immigrants in U.S. elections.
Deporting undocumented immigrants has been a central tenet of Trump’s platform for a potential second term, following his successful campaign against an alleged “invasion” by criminals.
Recent raids conducted by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency in Los Angeles have triggered days of largely peaceful protests, though sporadic instances of violence have been reported. President Trump has leveraged these violent incidents to deploy 4,000 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines to the Democratic-led city, a move made against the objections of local and state authorities.
California has initiated legal action to regain control of the National Guardsmen from the Trump administration, arguing an overreach of authority. This lawsuit is currently progressing through federal court.
Mayor Karen Bass announced on Sunday that an overnight curfew, implemented last week to curb vandalism and looting during the protests, would be extended for “a couple more days.” She described the prevalent fear and anger within the heavily Latino city stemming from the immigration raids.
“People are afraid to leave their homes,” Mayor Bass stated, adding that the raids have at times felt “indiscriminate.” She emphasized, “This is the United States. You are not supposed to have to show your papers if you go out in public,” concluding, “It’s hard for me to believe it’s targeted.”
Los Angeles remained largely calm on Sunday, the ninth day of protests, with only a small number of demonstrators marching outside City Hall prior to the curfew’s enforcement.
