London, UK – Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today indicated that Bangladesh’s next general elections could potentially be held in the week leading up to the holy month of Ramadan in February 2026, provided all necessary preparations are finalized. This significant remark was made during a morning meeting with BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman at a London hotel.
A joint statement issued by the Chief Adviser and the Acting BNP Chairman following their discussion described the meeting as taking place in a “very cordial atmosphere.”
According to the statement, Tarique Rahman proposed to the Chief Adviser that the elections be arranged before the start of Ramadan next year. The statement further noted that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia also believes this timeframe would be preferable for the polls.
Professor Yunus reiterated his earlier announcement that the elections would be held in the first half of April 2026. However, he added a critical caveat regarding the potential February date: “If all preparations are completed, the polls could be organised in the week before the start of Ramadan in 2026. In that case, it will be necessary to achieve sufficient progress on reforms and trials by that time.”
Tarique Rahman reportedly welcomed the Chief Adviser’s stance and extended thanks on behalf of his party. Professor Yunus, in turn, expressed gratitude to Tarique Rahman for the productive discussion.
