More than 9.1 million animals were sacrificed across Bangladesh during this year’s Eid-ul-Azha, with cows and goats comprising the overwhelming majority, according to data released by the Department of Livestock Services.
A total of 9,136,734 animals were sacrificed. This figure includes 4,705,106 cows and buffaloes, 4,430,668 goats and sheep, and 960 other animals, as detailed in an official release.
Geographically, Sylhet division recorded the fewest sacrifices with 319,823 animals, followed by Mymensingh division with 383,162. Conversely, Rajshahi division registered the highest number of sacrifices, tallying 2,324,971 cattle. Dhaka division followed with 2,185,040 sacrifices.
Other divisions reported significant numbers as well: Chattogram division saw 1,753,732 animals sacrificed, Khulna division recorded 804,224, Barishal division 400,783, and Rangpur division 964,999.
The Department of Livestock Services stated that this year’s figures were compiled through a stratified random sampling methodology. This involved collecting at least one percent samples from three villages (categorized as small, medium, and large) within each upazila to ensure comprehensive data.
The department also reported that 3,310,603 sacrificial animals remained unsold. Explaining this surplus, the department attributed it to the higher production of sacrificial animals this year, deeming it a normal outcome. These unsold animals, it noted, are expected to be utilized for various rituals and ceremonies in the future.
