Sylhet records highest rainfall

Sylhet district has experienced unprecedented rainfall, recording 404.8 millimeters between 6 AM yesterday and 9 AM today. This figure marks the highest daily rainfall ever observed in the district.

Shah Md. Sajeeb Hossain, assistant director of the Sylhet Meteorological Department, confirmed the record, stating that it surpasses the previous high of 309 millimeters, which was set on July 2, 2023.

A breakdown of the rainfall over the last 24 hours shows 156 millimeters between 12 PM and 3 PM on Saturday, 35 millimeters from 3 PM to 6 AM (Sunday), and a substantial 206.2 millimeters in the 12-hour period from 6 PM (Saturday) to 6 AM today (Sunday).

The heavy downpour has led to a significant rise in the water levels of Sylhet’s rivers, with some areas already experiencing water levels above the danger mark and others nearing it. Meteorological Office sources indicate that rainfall is expected to continue in Sylhet for an additional three days.
