Sierra Leone seeks help for growing mpox outbreak

Sierra Leonean authorities are appealing for international assistance to control the escalating spread of mpox within the country. This call for help comes as the latest figures, released on Saturday, indicate a continued rise in reported cases.

According to an official report reviewed by AFP, Sierra Leone has recorded a total of 3,350 mpox cases since January. Of these, 1,779 individuals have recovered, but tragically, 16 deaths have been attributed to the disease. These numbers represent an increase from the 3,011 cases reported just a week prior. While still a concern, this rise is less steep than the nearly 50 percent increase in registered cases observed since the update on May 13.

“We appreciate our development partners and we will continue to ask for their assistance for the necessary resources to respond to the rising cases of mpox in the country,” Deputy Health Minister Charles Senessie stated to AFP on Friday, underscoring the urgent need for global support.
