Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today underscored the imperative to curtail plastic usage across all sectors.
“Specifically, the complete eradication of single-use polythene bags is essential,” she stated, emphasizing the need to cultivate a preference for cloth and jute bags as sustainable alternatives.
Ms. Hasan conveyed these remarks during an interactive session with environmental organizations and students at the Rajshahi Circuit House this morning.
Highlighting the profound environmental degradation caused by plastic and polythene shopping bags, she noted the government’s ongoing initiatives to encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly alternatives.
The environment adviser further emphasized that collaborative public engagement, in conjunction with governmental efforts, is crucial for achieving meaningful progress.
Expressing concern over the increasing trend of filling ponds, canals, and other water bodies due to urban development, she stressed the critical importance of preserving natural water reservoirs for water conservation and maintaining groundwater equilibrium.
Ms. Hasan urged the younger generation to adopt an environmentally conscious lifestyle, stating, “Every seemingly small action we take can contribute to significant positive changes.”
The meeting was attended by Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhtar, Alamgir Kabir, General Secretary of Bangladesh Poriborton Andolon (BAPA), representatives from various environmental organizations, government officials, and students.
All participants emphasized the necessity of strengthening local-level awareness campaigns for environmental conservation.
The adviser directed the Deputy Commissioner to implement necessary measures for the restoration of ponds and water bodies, and assured that her ministry would provide comprehensive support to facilitate these efforts.
