First US pope Leo XIV to celebrate inaugural mass

Tens of thousands of Catholics and numerous political figures, including US Vice President JD Vance, are expected to convene at the Vatican on Sunday for the inaugural mass of Leo XIV, the first pontiff from the United States.

Ten days following the selection of the unassuming Robert Francis Prevost from among the College of Cardinals to lead the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics, his papacy will formally commence with a ceremony in St Peter’s Square.

The mass is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am (0800 GMT), but Pope Leo XIV will make his initial appearance among the gathered crowd at 9:00 am aboard the popemobile, the specially designed vehicle frequently utilized by his predecessor, Pope Francis, to engage with the faithful.

Subsequently, Pope Leo XIV will preside over a ceremony steeped in tradition and symbolism, including the bestowal of his distinctive papal ring, before delivering a homily that will delineate the guiding principles of his pontificate.

Having served as a missionary in Peru for two decades, the 69-year-old from Chicago remains unfamiliar to many within the Catholic community. However, in the preceding week, he has offered insights into his leadership approach.

In engagements with journalists, clergy, and diplomats, he has consistently advocated for peace in a world marked by conflict and has championed the cause of social justice.

In a more lighthearted moment, the avid sports enthusiast and amateur tennis player also met Jannik Sinner, the men’s world number one tennis player, at the Vatican.
