Pakistan returns Indian border guard captured after Kashmir attack

Pakistan repatriated a captured border guard to India on Wednesday, marking a further indication of de-escalation following a ceasefire that concluded four days of conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations.

The guard’s capture occurred the day after an April attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, which resulted in 26 fatalities and triggered retaliatory missile, drone, and fighter jet incursions.

While no group claimed responsibility for the April 22 attack, India attributed blame to Pakistan for its alleged support. Islamabad has denied these accusations and has called for an independent investigation.

“Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in the custody of Pakistan Rangers since April 23, 2025, was handed over to India,” stated India’s Border Security Force.

The statement further noted that the handover was “conducted peacefully and in accordance with established protocols.”

Earlier, Mr. Shaw’s wife, Rajani, expressed her confidence in his return to the Indian Express newspaper.
