The night of Thursday, May 8, saw the departure of the third cargo flight from Sylhet Osmani International Airport for Spain.
At 10:27 p.m., a chartered Galistair Aviation freighter (flight 8S-1934) bearing 60 tonnes of ready-made clothing took off.
The issue was confirmed by Shahnewaz Talukder, Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ regional manager for Sylhet.
On April 27, the first direct cargo flight from Sylhet was launched, bringing with it 60 tonnes of clothing. With almost 58 tonnes of clothing on board, the second flight took off for Madrid, Spain on May 1.
Shahnewaz Talukder said, “At present, one cargo flight is transporting garment products to Europe every week.”
He added that building a packaging house in Sylhet will increase the region’s ability to export. “If a packing house is built, it will open the door to exporting fresh vegetables to Europe,” he stated.
According to Shahnewaz Talukder, companies are free to establish packaging houses on their own initiative, and the government has promised complete cooperation.
Since the launch, three cargo flights have been run, according to Md. Hafiz Ahmed, director of Sylhet Osmani International Airport. In an effort to boost export volume, plans are in place to run two flights every week.
