Bangladesh Urges Pakistan to Address Historical Issues for Stronger Bilateral Relations

Bangladesh has called on Pakistan to adopt a proactive approach to resolve longstanding issues and strengthen bilateral relations. Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin emphasized the need to address unresolved matters, including the 1971 Liberation War genocide, repatriation of stranded Pakistanis, and the equitable distribution of pre-independence assets.

Following a foreign office consultation with Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch, Uddin told the press, “We have raised the historically unresolved issues with Pakistan.” These concerns include the transfer of foreign aid funds for the victims of the 1970 cyclone, a formal apology for the 1971 genocide, and the payment of due assets.

“We believe this is the right time to resolve these issues for a strong foundation of our relationship,” he added.

While Pakistan has shown a willingness to remain engaged, discussions on the details are expected to continue. Notably, this is the first foreign secretary-level consultation between the two nations in 15 years.

Bangladesh has requested Pakistan to pay $4.3 billion as its share of pre-independence assets and an additional $200 million in unpaid foreign donations for the 1970 cyclone victims. The specifics of these payments, including adjustments for currency devaluation, are expected to be discussed in future talks.

Foreign Secretary Uddin clarified that Bangladesh seeks a relationship with Pakistan based on mutual respect and benefit, rather than aligning with any one country.

The consultation also led to plans for a visit by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to Bangladesh in late April 2025. Both nations are exploring ways to enhance bilateral ties, including launching direct flights between the countries.

The meeting also touched upon strengthening economic and trade relations, agricultural collaboration, and scientific research exchanges. Furthermore, both sides discussed regional cooperation, emphasizing the importance of revitalizing the SAARC framework and supporting the safe return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.

On the Middle East crisis, Bangladesh and Pakistan condemned the ongoing human rights violations in Gaza and reaffirmed their commitment to the goals of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
