A visiting United States delegation met with Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, at the State Guest House Jamuna today, reaffirming Washington’s support for the interim government’s reform initiatives. The discussions also encompassed regional matters concerning peace, security, and development.
The US delegation comprised Deputy Assistant Secretaries of State Nicole A. Chulick and Andrew Herrup. Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, and the head of the US mission in Dhaka, Tracey Ann Jacobson, were present at the meeting. According to Chief Adviser Yunus’s Deputy Press Secretary, Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, the meeting underscored the strong bilateral relations between the two nations.
The US officials expressed profound appreciation for Bangladesh’s generosity in hosting over 1.2 million Rohingya refugees. They commended the leadership of Chief Adviser Yunus for advancing efforts toward the rehabilitation of the displaced population. Chulick remarked, “We appreciate your vision of looking at the Rohingya issue not in isolation but in the context of Myanmar as a whole.”
Chief Adviser Yunus highlighted the recent identification of 180,000 Rohingyas by the Myanmar government as eligible for return to Rakhine as a significant step forward. He also emphasized the interim government’s commitment to enhancing regional cooperation, connectivity, and fostering people-to-people ties.BSS
In response, Chulick acknowledged the Chief Adviser’s approach to strengthening regional cooperation and connectivity. She stated, “We appreciate your vision of looking at the Rohingya issue not in isolation but in the context of Myanmar as a whole.”
The Chief Adviser reiterated the interim government’s dedication to collaborating closely with the Trump administration across various bilateral domains. He expressed gratitude to US President Donald J. Trump for reinstating aid for the Rohingyas and implementing a ninety-day pause in the application of reciprocal tariffs. Yunus affirmed, “We are continuing our work to support his trade agenda.”
