The Bangladesh government’s recent humanitarian efforts to assist earthquake-hit Myanmar have significantly bolstered bilateral relations, according to Colonel Md. Shafiqul Islam of the Directorate of Military Operations at the Army Headquarters. During a press briefing at Dhaka Cantonment, Colonel Islam emphasized the pivotal role these efforts play in fostering trust between the two nations.
On March 28, a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, causing widespread destruction and a humanitarian crisis. In response, Bangladesh launched a swift aid initiative, providing rescue, relief, and medical support. The Bangladesh Army, under the Armed Forces Division, spearheaded the operation with a 21-member rescue team from the Engineer Corps, alongside a 10-member medical team, led by Colonel Shamim. The mission also included contributions from the Navy, Air Force, Fire Service, Civil Defense, and a civilian medical team.
The Bangladesh government’s efforts have been highly praised by Myanmar’s government and citizens, receiving extensive media coverage in both print and electronic outlets in Myanmar. Colonel Islam expressed confidence that this aid mission would have a long-lasting positive impact on the two countries’ diplomatic ties.
In addition, Colonel Islam discussed several other activities of the Bangladesh Army, including ensuring safety during the Eid holiday, aiding Rohingya refugees, and managing national security across various sectors, including industrial zones and public order.
The army’s proactive stance in supporting the nation’s peace and order has earned praise, and their efforts have continued to positively impact the nation’s security and international relations.
