Germany to Contribute €52.5 Million for Bangladesh’s Climate Adaptation Efforts

On April 16, 2025, Germany and Bangladesh entered into an agreement for a significant climate change initiative, with Germany committing to provide €52.5 million (approximately BDT 724 crore) to support Bangladesh’s climate adaptation projects. The agreement was signed by Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary of Bangladesh’s Economic Relations Division (ERD), and Achim Tröster, the German Ambassador to Bangladesh.

The funding is designated for the “Climate Change Adapted Urban Development Programme VIII,” which aims to enhance the resilience of local communities to the impacts of climate change. This initiative marks the first financial disbursement following the December 2024 Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) that established the Bangladesh-German Climate and Development Partnership (CDP).

The allocated funds will be used to assist local government bodies in strengthening their capacity to adapt to climate changes, reducing the vulnerability of at-risk populations, and improving urban living conditions. Additionally, the fund will support climate-sensitive infrastructure planning and execution, with the potential to finance future projects under German Cooperation’s climate adaptation framework.

This collaboration underscores the continued efforts by both countries to address climate challenges, ensuring sustainable development and resilience for vulnerable communities across Bangladesh.
