Waste burning is strictly prohibited: Rizwana

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the adviser for the environment, forests, and climate change, stated today that waste should never be burned, not even in the Matuail Sanitary Landfill.

Following her tour of the Matuail dump in Dhaka, she told reporters that a number of steps would be taken to guarantee the security and well-being of the local population.

The advisor agreed that it is not feasible to move the landfill from Matuail right now.

She did note, though, that two steel factories in the area will be told to close.

She made it clear that lead extraction or burning of batteries would not be permitted.

The Department of Environment has already taken action against some battery factories, and further steps will be taken if new complaints arise, Rizwana said.

During the visit, the adviser said air pollution in Dhaka has become a serious public health concern.

In order to address the issue, she urged city corporations, the Department of Environment, and other pertinent agencies to work together. She also emphasized the value of public awareness campaigns in addition to government activities and issued a warning that those who break environmental regulations will be held accountable.

The environment adviser traveled to a number of places under the jurisdiction of the Dhaka North and South City Corporations, including the Matuail Sanitary Landfill, Samadnagar near Jatrabari, Narsingdi Road, Chittagong Road, Kachpur, Sharifpara, and other regions that are prone to air pollution.

She talked to locals and went over air pollution management strategies.

Residents shared their health problems, including respiratory issues, caused by pollution. They demanded the speedy relocation of the landfill and urgent action to stop the burning of waste for the sake of public health.

The adviser listened to their concerns and assured them of appropriate action.

Mohammad Azaz, Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation; Md. Shahjahan Mia, Administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation; Rubina Ferdousi, Deputy Secretary (Environment) of the Ministry; RSM Munirul Islam, Conservator of Forests, were present, among others.
