An unlicensed fireworks factory in western India exploded Tuesday, killing 18 people and injuring five more, according to officials.
Rock and metal fragments flew far from the factory complex in the Gujarati town of Deesa as a result of the flaming explosion.
“The concrete roof collapsed due to a massive explosion in the factory, killing 18 people and injuring five more,” government spokesperson Rishikesh Patel told reporters.
He said that the factory was not functioning with a license.
The event is being investigated by authorities.
Fireworks are hugely popular in India, particularly during the Hindu festival of Diwali, as well as for use during wedding celebrations.
Explosions frequently occur in firecracker workshops, and owners frequently fail to follow simple safety precautions.
A firework factory explosion in the central state of Madhya Pradesh last year claimed the lives of eleven persons.
A similar explosion in 2019 claimed the lives of at least 18 persons in Punjab state and 10 more in Uttar Pradesh.
