According to Africa Command, the US military killed multiple IS members in an airstrike against the group on Saturday in Somalia’s Puntland region.
The European-based command stated in a statement that the most recent raid was carried out in cooperation with the Somali government and that it targeted “multiple ISIS-Somalia targets.”
Compared to Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorists Al-Shabaab, the IS group’s Somalia operation is comparatively tiny, although it has been growing in power in Puntland, a semi-autonomous region.
“The airstrike occurred southeast of Bosasso, Puntland, in Northeastern Somalia,” the AFRICOM statement said.
“AFRICOM’s initial assessment is that multiple ISIS-Somalia operatives were killed and no civilians were harmed,” it said.
A similar action two days prior, which AFRICOM stated supported “a larger counter-terrorism initiative” underway in Somalia, preceded the most recent strike.
Additionally, it comes after US bombings in February that Puntland authorities claimed killed “key figures” in IS without providing any other information.
