According to the Semafor news portal, which cited White House sources, President Donald Trump would cut emergency budget expenditures by around $3 billion, of which $2.5 billion will go toward international aid.
These sources claim that Trump will reduce the amount of money set aside for emergency spending under the 2023 debt ceiling law passed by the former US President Joe Biden’s administration.
According to the portal, almost $2.5 billion—which Trump plans to reduce—was set aside for foreign aid, which includes funding for non-governmental organizations that address migration and refugees, economic development projects in Moldova and Georgia, and inclusivity-related efforts. These actions won’t, however, have an impact on military aid to allies, including Ukraine.
A government official told the news portal that some of the foreign aid financing was poorly considered and did not go through a thorough review process. According to Semafor, the remaining roughly $9.4 billion in emergency assistance that the 2023 legislation stipulates will not be affected.
US officials began a thorough examination of federal budget expenses as soon as US President Donald Trump took office on January 20. Elon Musk, an entrepreneur and the head of the US Department of Government Efficiency, has stated that he wants to cut $2 trillion in government spending in Washington. At present, the United States’ national debt surpasses $36.5 trillion. The Congressional Budget Office forecasts that by 2034, the national debt may have risen to above $50 trillion.
