Netherlands to assist in developing city’s cannels, water bodies

The Netherlands government has assured of its cooperation in sustainable development of the cannels and water-bodies under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and establishment of blue networks in the capital.

The Ambassador of the Netherlands in Dhaka, Andre Carstens, today gave this assurance during a courtesy call with the Administrator of the DNCC Mohammad Ezaz at Nagar Bhaban in city’s Gulshan area.

During the meeting, the DNCC Administrator told the ambassador that the corporation has already taken measures to free the illegal encroachment of the cannels and its re-digging for creating ‘blue network’ in the capital.

The DNCC has been working with other government and development organizations to set up ‘blue network’, the administrator said, adding that the Netherlands government can provide financial and technical assistance in this regard.

Through this cooperation, the existing bilateral relations between the two countries could be stronger in future, he added.

The DNCC Administration told the Ambassador that the beautiful cannels of the Netherlands are the ‘role model’ in the world and the model and experiences of the blue networks and hydro economic developments in the cities of Netherlands will be helpful for Dhaka city.

In replying to the proposal of the Administrator, the Ambassador said that his country is interested to work with Bangladesh in removing city water logging, sanitation management and sustainable development of the cannels in Dhaka.

Blue networks, he said, can be set up by developing the cannels of the city and his country is interested to work in this regard.

“We will send our proposals to Bangladesh soon in this regard and this will play a vital role in developing the bilateral relations of both the countries,” the ambassador added.
