An deal in Syria to incorporate the autonomous Kurdish region’s institutions into the national administration was praised by the US on Tuesday.
“The United States welcomes the recently announced agreement between the Syrian interim authorities and the Syrian Democratic Forces to integrate the northeast into a unified Syria,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement, referring to the Kurdish-led, US-allied SDF force.
Since overthrowing longtime leader Bashar al-Assad in December following more than 13 years of civil conflict, Syria’s new leaders, led by interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, have worked to disband armed organizations and impose government control over the whole nation.
The leader of the Kurdish-dominated SDF and the Syrian presidency announced an agreement Monday to incorporate the autonomous Kurdish administration, which has ruled most of the northeast for the past ten years, into the national government.
To the annoyance of Turkey, which associates the fighters with domestic militants, the United States partnered with the SDF in recent years to fight the Islamic State extremist group.
