Filippo Grandi, the visiting UNHCR High Commissioner for Refugees, expressed hope that the international community would refocus on finding a solution to the Rohingya issue.
He was hopeful that the UN meeting, which Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus had suggested, would create enough impetus for everyone to make significant efforts.
According to a ministry press release, Filippo Grandi made this statement at a meeting with Md. Touhid Hossain, the adviser for foreign affairs, at the latter’s office.
During the meeting, the Foreign Adviser thanked the High Commissioner for his visit to Bangladesh and appreciated the continued support extended by the UN to the Rohingyas sheltered in Bangladesh.
He highlighted the important role of the UNHCR and the international community in bringing a durable solution to the crisis.
Adviser Hossain shared concern that failing to bring a lasting solution to this crisis will further destabilize the peace and security in the region.
UNHCR High Commissioner will visit the Rohingya camps in Coxs’Bazar tomorrow.
