Tesla rolls out advanced self-driving functions in China

The US electric vehicle behemoth Tesla said Tuesday that it has begun providing sophisticated self-driving features for its vehicles in China, such as autopilot on city streets.

The “Full Self-Driving” capability that Tesla provides in the US is comparable to the features outlined in its announcement.

Vehicles with that capabilities are designed to be operated under driver supervision and are not completely autonomous.

The state-run Shanghai Daily broke the story first on Tuesday.

Tesla said in a statement on its WeChat page that it will gradually roll out a software update that includes “automatic Autopilot-assisted driving on city streets”, as well as a rearview mirror function that detects whether drivers are paying attention.

The new version “has already been released for some car models, and will be gradually rolled to other suitable car models” , Tesla stated.

With two facilities there, China is a significant market for Tesla, which is attempting to compete with rapidly expanding domestic producers.

The company has been trying to get FSD approved in China, where it must adhere to stringent privacy and data regulations.
