The president urges journalists to play role in building ‘new Bangladesh’

Today, President Mohammed Shahabuddin urged journalists to contribute effectively to the creation of a democratic and discrimination-free “new Bangladesh,” infused with the spirit of the July-August public uprising and the 1971 Liberation War.

For the benefit of the nation and its citizens, the head of state also exhorted journalists to carry out their responsibilities with the highest professionalism.

At the Bangabhaban here this afternoon, the President made the call as part of a courtesy call from the recently elected executive committee (EC) of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU).

Noting that the mass-media is the fourth pillar of the state as well as the mirror of the society, President Shahabuddin said, “You (journalists) have nothing to be advised . . . You are sensible enough. Perform your duties with utmost professionalism.”

The President emphasized the mass media’s ability to effectively stop the spread of rumors, false information, disinformation, and distorted information while also alerting the public to such activities.

He emphasized the remarkable role that journalists have played in the nation’s democratic struggles, including the Great Liberation War, and stated that their work is crucial to ensuring that society is fair and equitable and that people’s human dignity be respected.

He also exhorted the DRU leaders to use objective criticism and highlighting the government’s errors to guarantee accountability and transparency in state governance.

Newly elected DRU President Abu Saleh Akon and General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohail led the 21-member DRU delegation.

The delegation presented DRU’s overall operations at the conference and asked for full cooperation in carrying out the different programs implemented for the benefit of journalists.

Among those in attendance were Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam and Military Secretary to the President Major General Mohammad Adil Chowdhury.
