BGB has been allowed to procure sound grenade, tear gas: Adviser

Home Affairs Advisor retired lieutenant general Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated here today that the government has chosen to provide the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) with tear gas canisters and sound grenades because their Indian counterparts have already utilized such weapons.

“We have already given nod to purchase sound grenades and tear shells for the BGB,” he told reporters in reply to a question after emerging from a meeting on law and order at his Bangladesh the Secretariat office here.

When asked how India could respond to the decision, Chowdhury stated that there was no reason for them to view it “negatively” because their Border Security Force (BSF) already employed the same weapons on Bangladeshi borders.

According to the adviser, the BGB currently possesses deadly or fatal weaponry that they could use if and when the need arose.

In response to a query about whether BGB was permitted to use the weapons that were purchased, he asked why the paramilitary force would not use them if necessary after acquiring the tear gas canisters and sound grenades.

Alam, however, described the current border situation as stable.

“There is no big problem on the border,” he said as asked for comments on the issue.

Weapon experts define a sound grenade, also known as a stun grenade or sound bomb, as a non-lethal explosive device that uses a loud explosion to momentarily confuse enemy or crowds.

On the other hand, the tear gas results in excessive tears, burning, impaired eyesight, trouble wallowing in the mouth, and a feeling of choking in the lung.
