German-Iranian woman released after 4-year custody in Iran

After more than four years, German-Iranian campaigner Nahid Taghavi was freed from Iranian detention. She was given a 10-year prison sentence for allegedly participating in an unlawful group and disseminating anti-state propaganda. She says she spent months in solitary confinement and mistreated.

While visiting Tehran in October 2020, architect Taghavi was taken into custody. She wound up in the notorious Evin Prison, where she spent seven months in solitary confinement. In a trial in which she had no attorney, she was convicted and sentenced to more than 10 years in prison.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock welcomed the release on X, formerly Twitter, calling it a moment of great joy. It is unknown why the release occurred at this time and whether Germany provided compensation. Nahid Taghavi is now recuperating with her family. At the airport she pointed out that human rights violations in Iran continue.
