Karl Nehammer, the conservative chancellor of Austria, announced on Saturday that he will resign in the “coming days” following the termination of coalition negotiations with the Social Democrats due to differences of opinion on important matters.
The unexpected action might result in the Alpine EU member state holding snap elections, or the conservatives could engage in negotiations with the far-right, which emerged victorious in the September national elections.
Nehammer said he would resign “both as chancellor and party chairman of the People’s Party (OeVP) in the coming days and enable an orderly transition” in a video message posted on X.
This comes a day after Austria’s liberal party pulled out of talks to establish a moderate administration through a three-party coalition.
The aim had been to sideline the far-right Freedom Party (FPOe) that won September elections with 29 percent but was unable to find partners to form a national government in the Alpine EU member state.
