Rizwana seeks Nordic support for establishing elephant wildlife sanctuary

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, an adviser on the environment, forests, and climate change, asked Nordic nations today for financial and technical assistance in creating a wildlife sanctuary for captive elephants in Bangladesh.

She made the plea during a visit to her Secretariat office here by Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Nicolas Weeks, Norwegian Ambassador Hakon Arald Gulbrandsen, and Danish Deputy Head of Mission Anders Karlsen.

They talked about biodiversity conservation, renewable energy, wildlife, and environmental contamination from single-use plastic bags during the discussion.

Rizwana, also adviser for water resources, sought cooperation form Nordic countries to clean up rivers across Bangladesh.

Highlighting the urgent need for sustainable solutions for plastic pollution, she invited Nordic countries to share their experiences with Bangladesh in this regard.

The Nordic ambassadors reaffirmed their commitment to extend cooperation in biodiversity conservation, prevention of river pollution and development of renewable energy.

Denmark is interested in investing $1.2 billion to build an offshore wind farm near Cox’s Bazar that would produce 500 MW of power, according to Anders Karlsen, Denmark’s deputy head of mission.
The ambassador of Norway expressed Norway’s willingness to assist in the execution of a “Marine Litter Prevention Project” that would encourage the use of sustainable plastics and lessen marine litter in Bangladesh.

As the chief guest for the Nordic Day event on February 6, 2025, Rizwana accepted, highlighting the expanding collaboration between Bangladesh and the Nordic nations in tackling environmental issues.

Senior officials of the two ministries and embassies also present on the occasion.
