US police are baffled by a huge marijuana seizure after discovering $100 million worth of the narcotic, all neatly wrapped up, but with no owner in sight.
When neighbours noticed a strong odour emanating from a recently constructed warehouse in Oak Hills, California, detectives were called to the scene.
When they entered, they discovered that the entire 4,800-square-foot (450-square-meter) building was filled with marijuana-filled trash bags.
Officers had to transfer the 3,000 bags, which weighted 45 tonnes in total, over the course of two days and 51 truckloads.
It is unclear, however, who exactly owns the haul, which is worth over $100 million on the black market.
Detective Chris Bassett of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department admitted that officers were stumped by the find.
Asked by a reporter if investigators had any idea who it belonged to, he replied: “Not at this time.”
“The first thought that went through my mind is, where is this marijuana going? Is it going to illegal dispensaries? Is it going to be distributed throughout the United States?” he said.
Marijuana — both medicinally and recreationally — is legal in California, but commercial cultivation requires a permit.
