Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the Chief Adviser’s High Representative for Rohingya Issues and Priority Affairs, has called on Qatar to provide strong assistance in enabling the Rohingyas’ return to their own Myanmar.
According to a press release from the foreign ministry here today, the appeal was made during a meeting with Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, at the Sheraton Hotel in Doha on Monday evening.
Dr. Rahman brought attention to the grave circumstances of the almost 1.2 million Rohingyas who have lived in Bangladesh since 2007 throughout the conversation.
He claimed that Bangladesh has serious social, economic, environmental, and security issues as a result of the Rohingyas’ extended stay.
Dr. Rahman also stressed the need for global attention and concerted efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis.
He further noted that in response to an appeal by Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus, the United Nations General Assembly has unanimously decided to convene an international conference on the Rohingya issue next year.
He expressed the hope that Qatar would actively contribute to the success of this initiative.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Qatar responded by promising full cooperation and restating Qatar’s resolve to address the Rohingyas’ cruel situation, especially in relation to their Muslim identity.
Additionally, Dr. Rahman gave the Qatari Minister an update on Bangladesh’s current state of affairs, characterising it as stable.
The minister expressed warm respects to Professor Muhammad Yunus and the Bangladeshi people while restating Qatar’s unwavering support for the country’s interim government.
The meeting was attended by Mohammad Waliur Rahman, Bangladesh’s Deputy Chief of Mission, and Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Qatar.
