104 journalists killed in 2024, over half in Gaza: press group

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) announced on Tuesday that 104 journalists have been killed globally this year, with more than half of those deaths occurring in Gaza, making it “particularly deadly” for journalists.

IFJ general secretary Anthony Bellanger told AFP that although the 2024 death toll is lower than the 129 deaths in 2023, it is still “one of the worst years” on record.

In 2024, Israel’s offensive in Gaza claimed the lives of 55 Palestinian media workers, according to statistics compiled by the press association.

“Since the start of the war on 7 October 2023, at least 138 Palestinian journalists have been killed,” the federation said.

Bellanger condemned the “massacre that is happening before the eyes of the world”.

With 135 journalists imprisoned, including in Hong Kong, where the government has come under fire from Western countries for enforcing national security measures that suppress dissent and other liberties, China topped the list of countries that jail reporters the worst.

Because of disparate counting techniques, the IFJ’s figure of journalists slain is usually much greater than Reporters Without Borders’.

Reporters Without Borders reported in 2023 that two collaborators and fifty-four journalists were killed while doing their jobs. Later this week, the NGO will provide its own 2024 figure.
