Donald Trump, the US president-elect, stated on Saturday that he wants to replace the current director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation with Kash Patel, a loyalist.
On his Truth Social network, the incoming president named the former advisor and Pentagon officer, who is well-known for his opinions criticising the so-called government “deep state,” as his pick for the position.
Hard-liner For years, Republicans have maintained that Trump has been suppressed behind the scenes by a purported “deep state” of allegedly biassed government workers.
Since Christopher Wray, the current director of the FBI, was nominated to a 10-year term in 2017, he would have to resign or face termination.
The FBI under Wray — who Trump appointed — has investigated the incoming president.
“Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator and ‘America First’ fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending Justice, and protecting the American People,” Trump wrote in the post.
Patel, the son of Indian immigrants and author of a book about the “deep state,” served in several high-level posts during Trump’s first term, including as a national security advisor and as chief of staff to the acting defense secretary.
“Kash did an incredible job during my First Term,” Trump said, adding that he would work to “end the growing crime epidemic in America, dismantle the migrant criminal gangs, and stop the evil scourge of human and drug trafficking across the Border.”
In a separate move, Trump proposed Florida sheriff Chad Chronister to lead the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
“Chad will work with our great Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to secure the Border, stop the flow of Fentanyl, and other Illegal Drugs, across the Southern Border, and SAVE LIVES,” Trump stated on Truth Social.
The president-elect has appointed Bondi, a former Florida attorney general and ardent Trump supporter, to head the Department of Justice.
