UAE govt pardons 75 more Bangladeshis

75 more Bangladeshi expatriates who were arrested for taking part in protests in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in support of the anti-discrimination movement in Bangladesh during July and August have been released by the UAE government.

The Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment stated in a statement released here today that the release takes the total number of those pardoned to 188.

On similar allegations, the UAE government had previously freed 113 foreign nationals.

Earlier, in a phone call with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus asked for the release of Bangladeshi expats who had been found guilty.

Similar to the last instance of expatriate release, the UAE issued an order to stop the 75 Bangladeshis’ sentences from being carried out and to start the deportation process.
