Russia’s defence minister arrives in North Korea for visit: state media

According to a military statement cited by Russian state news media, Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov landed in North Korea on Friday.

Belousov would speak with many North Korean “military and military-political officials” during his formal visit to Pyongyang, the statement stated without providing further details.

According to the statement, North Korean counterpart No Kwang Chol greeted the Russian defence chief in Pyongyang.

Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, Russia and North Korea have bolstered their military alliance.

The two nations agreed to work together to fight Western sanctions and to offer military support to one another in the event of an attack when they inked a strategic cooperation deal in June.

South Korea and the United States have also charged that the nuclear-armed North sent over 10,000 soldiers to support Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. According to experts, Kim Jong Un was keen to provide his troops access to cutting-edge equipment and combat experience in exchange.

The UN has imposed sanctions on both Russia and North Korea, the latter for the war in Ukraine and the former for its nuclear weapons program.
