Shortly after the polls closed, preliminary results showed that voters in the Swiss city of Basel on Sunday overwhelmingly supported spending about $40 million to host the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest.
Sixty-four percent of voters in the Basel city region supported using taxpayer funds to host the Eurovision next year, according to the partial count, which was conducted with the majority of voters casting their ballots in advance by mail.
The TV spectacle, which attracts a huge worldwide television audience, would have been significantly reduced in size without the host city’s funding.
