NATO said Tuesday that Radmila Shekerinska of North Macedonia has been named deputy secretary general of the alliance.
Mircea Geoana of Romania will be replaced by 52-year-old Shekerinska later this year.
“She is a true believer in NATO, knows the work it takes to join the Alliance, and what it means to be a full member,” NATO chief Mark Rutte said in a statement.
Shekerinska, a former deputy prime minister for European integration, was also the defence minister of North Macedonia before to the Balkan nation’s 2020 NATO membership.
After American Rose Gottemoeller, who held the office from 2016 to 2019, she will be the second woman to occupy it.
