Shaheed Noor Hossain Day today

Shaheed Noor Hossain Day will be observed today in a befitting manner.

On this day in 1987, Noor Hossain, who imprinted his bare chest and back with the slogans “Free democracy” and “Down with autocracy”, embraced martyrdom in police firing during an anti-autocracy demonstration at Zero Point in the city, now known as Shaheed Noor Hossain Square.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and other political and social organizations have taken various programmes to observe the day.

The martyrdom of Noor Hossain and others during the popular uprising in late 1990 accelerated the anti-autocracy campaign, making November 10 a crucial and unforgettable day in Bangladesh’s democracy struggle history.

Ershad, the then-autocratic monarch, was forced to resign on December 6, 1990, in response to the movement.

Since then, Shaheed Noor Hossain Day has been honoured annually.
