Moscow and Astana announced Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin will make an official visit to Kazakhstan, the largest country in Central Asia by geographical area, later this month.
Although Kazakhstan has long been an ally of Russia, the former Soviet republic is concerned about Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
When Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visited Kazakhstan and met with Kazakh counterpart Murat Nurtleu, he announced Putin’s visit.
According to Lavrov, the visit was scheduled for November 27.
The Russian leader recently travelled to Kazakhstan in July to attend a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, which is a security alliance of China, Iran, Russia, and Central Asian nations.
Russia and Kazakhstan have strong military, political, and economic relations.
However, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the president of Kazakhstan, denounced Moscow’s annexation of eastern Ukrainian territories in 2022.
