Farida seeks more UN supports for Bangladesh’s sustainable development

In order to secure Bangladesh’s economic and sustainable development, Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhter has asked for additional assistance from the UN and other stakeholders in the livestock and fisheries, environment, and agriculture sectors.

“The stakeholders including the UN can provide supports to the government to ensure Bangladesh’s sustainable development,” she said.

She made the appeal when the UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Gwyn Lewis paid a courtesy call on her at the latter’s Secretariat office here today.

According to a ministry press release, they emphasised the necessity for UN collaboration across many sectors on “One Health” and “Blue Economy” at the meeting.

Gwyn Lewis claimed that by implementing a number of practical steps, Bangladesh has emerged as a regional leader in “One Health.”

As Farida Akhter pushed for UN agencies to promote Bangladesh’s sustainable development, she promised to increase cooperation with the country.
Bangladesh has a large land border with India and Myanmar, which puts the country at risk of zoonotic diseases—human infectious diseases like HIV and Ebola—being carried by animals and birds, according to the UN resident coordinator.

Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Sayeed Mahmood Belal Haider, additional secretary ATM Mostofa Kamal, UN Senior Human Rights Adviser to Bangladesh Huma Khan, among others, were present.
