In order to alleviate water constraint in coastal Bangladesh and handle medical waste, Eastern Bank Ltd. (EBL) and the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) have struck an agreement.
According to a press release, the agreement inked today at EBL’s central office in the city states that BDT 9.2 million will be provided for the unique corporate social responsibility program.
EBL has extended its assistance to the second phase of the ICDDR,B initiative, “Best Practices in Sustainable Solid Bio-hazardous Waste Management,” after a medical waste management project it financed in early 2024 proved successful.
This phase will enhance waste treatment capacity at ICDDR,B by introducing advanced sterilization technology and providing training to key healthcare facilities in Dhaka.
The programme also aims to align national medical waste management policies with sustainable practices, ensuring a more environment-friendly and resilient healthcare system.
Under the agreement EBL would also support ICDDR,B project ‘Purified Water for Salinity-Prone Areas: Overcoming Water Scarcity Challenges in Coastal Bangladesh’.
To supply 200 families with clean drinking water, the project will build a reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment facility in Shyamnagar, in Satkhira district, one of the most salinity-affected areas in the nation.
According to the press release, measuring participants’ blood pressure and urine sodium levels both before and after they consume purified water is one of the project’s key components.
Senior authorities, ICDDR, B executive director Dr. Tahmeed Ahmed, and EBL CEO Ali Reza Iftekhar were in attendance.
