Professor Muhammad Yunus, Egypt’s chief advisor, has been invited to the D-8 Summit, which will take place in Cairo in December of next year.
Ambassador of Egypt in Dhaka At his Tejgaon office here today, Omar Fahmy gave the Chief Adviser the invitation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
The chiefs of state from at least five nations—Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Nigeria—have confirmed their attendance at the summit, which will take place in Cairo from December 16 to 19, according to the Egypt envoy at the conference.
He stated that the topic of how to assist the Palestinians in their fight against Israeli aggression will be covered at a crucial summit side discussion.
Following the July–August student-led mass revolt, Omar Fahmy also expressed his government’s support for Bangladesh’s interim government’s democratic transition initiatives.Prof. Yunus praised the assistance and said he hoped Egypt and Bangladesh will cooperate in several international fora, including the D-8 and OIC.
The Chief Adviser stated that he will give attending the D-8 summit in Egypt considerable thought.
Ambassador Fahmy hoped that business delegates from Bangladesh would also visit Egypt during the D-8 Summit.
According to him, Egypt wishes to learn about jute cultivation and gain from Bangladesh’s expertise in the pharmaceutical and ready-made clothing industries.
The ambassador advised the two nations to move quickly to finalise memorandums of understanding (MOUs) and agreements in the areas of pharmaceuticals, textiles, and agriculture.He confirmed Egypt’s support for Bangladesh’s candidature to the non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council for 2031-32.
Ambassador Fahmy also sought Dhaka’s support for Cairo’s candidacy for the post of the Director General of the UNESCO. He emphasised the renewal of the Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between Bangladesh and Egypt.
The first FOC between the two countries was held in 2018, but the second FOC has remained pending since 2021.
