Fire stations to be built at 32 upazilas soon: Home Adviser

Lieutenant General (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the home adviser, announced today that plans would soon be made to construct fire stations in 32 upazilas throughout the nation.

“Currently, there is no fire service station in 32 upazilas in the country. Fire service stations will be built in the upazilas as soon as possible,” he told journalists after visiting the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters in the city’s Fulbaria.

He stated that a location has already been set aside in the Munshiganj district’s Gazaria for the construction of a training academy, but it is not yet prepared for training. He added that they would shortly prepare it for training activities.

The Home Advisor promised to take the necessary steps to address the Fire Service and Civil Defence Directorate’s workforce shortage.

He praised the firefighters’ sincerity in carrying out their responsibilities and stated that since firemen receive lower allowances than other law enforcement organisations, it would be wise to increase their risk allowance.

Jahangir asked the authorities concerned to give priority to skilled, competent, and young people in the recruitment, as working in the firefighting service requires more physical strength than other services.

“It is very imperative to uphold discipline in the jobs. So, exemplary punishment should be given alongside issuing warning notices to ensure discipline in the firefighting service,” he said.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence staff worked diligently to fulfil the Home Adviser’s request that they continue their work with kindness.

According to Jahangir, “We have modern equipment, including a drone.” However, compared to the industrialised nations, we might lag somewhat.

During a view-exchange meeting with firefighting authorities and staff earlier, the adviser responded to a question by saying, “Necessary measures are being taken to this end.”

Among those in attendance were Md. Firoz Sarker, Additional Secretary of Security Services Division, and Brig. Gen. Muhammad Jahed, Director General of FSCD.

The Home Advisor had previously toured the fire department equipment display at the FSCD Headquarters.
